The Elmau Ex-Helfer(in) Network

I first created my Schloss Elmau web pages back in c.1995 (the Wayback Machine only goes back to the Compuserve 1998- version, but does show the subsequent incarnations at Freeserve 2002-, JapaneseTranslations 2006- and Ozaru.Net 2009-). Since then, I have been contacted by many ex-Helfer (and a few people intending to work at the Schloß, while it still had the Helferin system), and have enabled some old friends to get back in touch. ("Thank you for giving my e-mail address to my friend [xxx]! It was a big surprise to hear from him after such a long time. I tried to find him on the internet many times, but I couldn't find him. I'm glad he found your home page! It really works.")

So this page may help, if you are also looking to contact someone… If you set up a link pointing here — or preferably the new exElmau exHelfer site — it could make it easy for other ex-Helfer(innen) to find each other. Below is a list of many I've been in touch with over the last few yearsdecades, using maiden names for those who have since married, and the date they were at Elmau (if otherwise unmarked, 1984-5). Most of the e-mail addresses are long out of date, but could help tracking people down anyway.

In May 2000 this "network" suddenly took off — after a few years of only 1-2 messages per month, there was an explosion of interest and dozens of ex-Helfer(in) started getting in touch. As my time was limited, someone else took the initiative and set up a ttp://groups.yahoo.com/group/elmau/>Yahoo Group which offered various facilities I couldn't do here. It was rather sporadic, though — long periods with nothing happening — and is now defunct. Someone set up ttp://elmau.hyves.nl/>a separate group just for Dutch ex-Helfer(innen), also now defunct.

In June 2002, someone (Dietmar?) apparently decided to set up an "official" ex-Elmau page at www.exElmau.de, with plenty of emoji, funny colours, logins, registration screens… just not many ex-Elmauites, from what I saw. :-) Worst of all, it greeted you with the message, "Willkommen, Gast". Evidently they had no idea how most of us felt about the guests! This site too soon vanished.

Meanwhile I added several photos from 1984-5 to flickr.com/ozaru (also now defunct), with 44 others from Matt Busby dating from around 1980, while Marco Schipper created a great site with over 200 Elmau photos from the 70s and 80s — still valid (as of 2023)! There were more pix on the Yahoo site while it lasted. I also added here a page of Elmau memories from what people sent me, although this is only a small fraction, and I've deleted most of the names in case any 'confidences' were not meant to be shared. I also set up a trial guest book, which attracted a total of eight entries — they can still be seen.

My most recent attempt has been via Google Sites (still valid in 2022, and better than this page, so go straight to exHelferNet now!). But most people now find their old friends via Facebook or LinkedIn. If you want to get automatic notification any time this page is updated, try using a page monitoring service such as VisualPing, but it's unlikely to change much: the exElmau exHelfer page really is best!
