For over a decade, several Thanet musicians have been meeting every
week to play together, initially for their own enjoyment - but now
increasingly for functions such as weddings and funerals too,
throughout East Kent at venues such as Leeds Castle, Goodnestone Park, Knowlton
Court, Dover Maison Dieu, Quex Park, and various
churches, hotels, restaurants and individual houses. The line-up frequently
changes depending on who is available at any given time, which is how
we decided on the name 'Impromptu', but most often consists of a string quartet.
The main differences between our group and others you may see are probably as follows:
- We're local to Thanet, although we'll happily travel to Canterbury / Faversham / Deal etc.
- We do this mainly for fun, so can offer a professional service at 'amateur' prices
- We have a huge repertoire (over 300 pieces), and also arrange works for special themes
- We know most other musicians in the area so can recommend others if we're not available
Here is a 6 minute home-made video that gives some idea what we're like. The sound quality is rather poor but that's because of the cheap camera it was recorded on... You can hear better (studio) quality on tracks 4 and 11 of the
Railway Swing Band's 2010 CD "Our Sounds, Vol. 3": the CD notes say we 'gave their sound a new dimension'.
Here is also a snapshot of the group just after a performance at the Walpole Bay Hotel, Margate.

When we get time we may put up some photos or other videos etc. but in the meantime, please contact Ben Jones on 01843 847701 if you have an event you'd like to discuss.
